Polish onion exports reach 31 countries in early 2026, led by the Netherlands
Poland exported over 64,000 tonnes of onions to 31 countries between January and April 2026, with the Netherlands the largest buyer. Prices varied sharply, from 1.47 zł/kg in Romania to 4.34 zł/kg in Ukraine, according to topagrar.pl.
Polish onion exports spread across 31 markets in early 2026
Poland exported more than 64,000 tonnes of onions to 31 countries between January and the end of April 2026, according to topagrar.pl, citing preliminary data from Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS) under customs code CN 070310. The trade reached almost every part of Europe, yet it remained heavily concentrated among a handful of Western European buyers, with sharp price differences between destinations.
The Netherlands leads, Britain pays more
The Netherlands was by far the largest destination, absorbing 18.78 thousand tonnes worth 47.53 million zł at an average price of 2.53 zł/kg. The United Kingdom ranked second with 8.79 thousand tonnes valued at 30.57 million zł, but at a notably higher average price of 3.48 zł/kg — well above the level paid by Dutch buyers.
Belgium and Germany completed the top four. Belgium took 7.93 thousand tonnes worth 15.68 million zł, while Germany imported 7.16 thousand tonnes for 18.91 million zł. Their average prices stood at 1.98 zł/kg and 2.64 zł/kg respectively. France followed with 5.98 thousand tonnes worth 18.27 million zł at 3.06 zł/kg.
Central and Eastern Europe trail behind
Beyond the Western European leaders, volumes dropped sharply. Romania bought 2.42 thousand tonnes, Spain 1.85 thousand tonnes, Italy 1.72 thousand tonnes and Slovakia 1.70 thousand tonnes. Ukraine took 1.58 thousand tonnes, the Czech Republic 1.42 thousand tonnes and Lithuania 1.06 thousand tonnes. Smaller shipments went to Bulgaria (746 tonnes), Belarus (715 tonnes), Hungary (529 tonnes), Latvia (412 tonnes) and Ireland (345 tonnes).
According to topagrar.pl, the five largest buyers — the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and France — accounted for close to 76 percent of total exports.
Wide price gap between destinations
The average export price over the first four months of 2026 was 2.56 zł/kg. Among the ten largest buyers, Romania paid the least at 1.47 zł/kg, followed by Slovakia at 1.69 zł/kg and Spain at 1.76 zł/kg. Belgium also stayed below the average at 1.98 zł/kg.
At the other end, Ukraine paid the most among the top ten destinations, at an average of 4.34 zł/kg — nearly three times the Romanian price. Italy (3.09 zł/kg), the United Kingdom (3.48 zł/kg) and France (3.06 zł/kg) also paid premium rates, while shipments to the Netherlands and Germany went at 2.53 zł/kg and 2.64 zł/kg. topagrar.pl noted that the per-kilogram prices are approximate, calculated from total export value and volume.
Polish onions now reach practically every part of Europe, from the Iberian Peninsula through the British Isles and the Benelux countries to the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Even so, the concentration among the top buyers underlines how dependent the trade is on a small group of Western European markets.
