Poland’s largest potato-starch silo breaks ground in Trzemeszno
PPZ Trzemeszno has begun building Poland’s largest potato-starch storage silo, with capacity for 60,000 tonnes. The Krajowa Grupa Spożywcza subsidiary expects the facility to improve internal logistics, extend storage times and support further production growth.
A 60,000-tonne storage investment
Przedsiębiorstwo Przemysłu Ziemniaczanego Trzemeszno, part of Poland’s state-owned Krajowa Grupa Spożywcza, has begun construction of what will be the country’s largest silo for potato starch. Portal Spożywczy reported that KGS announced the ceremonial placement of a time capsule beneath the project on 18 August.
The new facility will have capacity for 60,000 tonnes. According to PPZ Trzemeszno president Jarosław Rogalski, that is six times the capacity of the storage structure currently used by the plant. The expansion addresses a mismatch that emerged after the processor doubled its production capacity during a broad modernisation programme while retaining a relatively limited storage base.
Production has outgrown existing storage
PPZ Trzemeszno is now one of Europe’s largest potato-starch producers, according to RMF24 and Portal Spożywczy. Last year, the company processed more than 352,000 tonnes of starch potatoes and produced over 80,000 tonnes of starch. The planned silo could therefore hold the equivalent of roughly three-quarters of that reported annual starch output, although actual inventory levels and turnover will depend on the plant’s operating and sales schedules.
Rogalski said the investment would substantially improve internal logistics and allow the company to store starch for longer. Greater storage flexibility should reduce pressure to move finished product immediately after processing and give the producer more control over the timing of deliveries. For buyers and distributors, a larger buffer could also support more consistent product availability between processing campaigns.
Capacity growth and new starch products
KGS said the project would create conditions for further production increases at the Trzemeszno starch plant. The company also expects the facility to support an expansion of its portfolio with new starch-based products. Neither publication disclosed the investment cost, the source of financing or specific targets for the next stage of production growth.
The project forms part of KGS’s wider food-processing portfolio. RMF24 described the group as Poland’s largest agrifood company, with about 40% of the domestic sugar market. Its subsidiaries also operate in seeds and agriculture, starch, grain milling, food manufacturing, and fruit and vegetable processing. Many of the businesses within the group have operated for more than 100 years.
Commissioning planned for 2027
Technology trials for the silo are scheduled for May 2027, with full commissioning planned for the following potato campaign. The reports did not specify the exact start date of that campaign. Execution of the testing and commissioning timetable will determine when PPZ Trzemeszno can begin using the additional capacity commercially.
For Poland’s potato-starch chain, the immediate significance lies less in new processing equipment than in inventory management. The plant has already doubled production capacity; the 60,000-tonne silo is intended to bring storage infrastructure closer to that expanded scale. If completed as planned, it will give PPZ Trzemeszno more room to manage seasonal production, organise internal flows and prepare for additional output without relying on its current, much smaller storage facility.
