Production reaches a new high

Peru’s pork production reached 217,623 tonnes in 2025, setting a new national high as consumption rose to 11 kilograms per person annually. Altavoz reported the figures based on information from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, known as Midagri.

The country’s pig population totaled 3,702,587 animals during the year. The scale of the herd and the rise in meat output show that pork has become an increasingly significant component of Peru’s domestic animal-protein market.

Demand is supported by established local dishes, including pan con chicharrón, a traditional combination of fried pork, sweet potato, onion and chili pepper. The dish received further international attention in 2025 after taking first place in the event described as the “Breakfast World Cup.”

Small farmers participate in a concentrated market

Approximately 419,702 pig farmers operate in Peru, according to Midagri. The large number of producers means that growth in pork consumption can support rural and small-scale businesses, although production itself remains concentrated in a limited number of regions.

Lima accounts for 44% of national pork production, followed by La Libertad with 11%. Ica and Arequipa each represent 7%, while Huánuco contributes 4%. Together, these five areas produce nearly three-quarters of the national total.

Production methods are also changing. Intensive systems now account for 75% of output, according to official information. This indicates that most pork is already supplied through higher-density commercial operations, even though hundreds of thousands of farmers participate in the broader sector.

Formalization and export access become priorities

Peru has begun efforts to secure access for pork exports to China and Singapore. No timetable or expected shipment volume was disclosed, but sanitary approval in those markets could give processors and larger producers an additional sales channel beyond domestic consumption.

The National Agricultural Health Service, Senasa, is providing technical assistance intended to help producers enter the formal market. Stronger compliance with animal-health and production requirements will be important both for domestic formalization and for any future export certification.

Domestic promotion remains the immediate demand driver. The National Day of Peruvian Pork Pan con Chicharrón, institutionalized by the Peruvian Association of Pig Farmers and Midagri, is intended to promote locally produced pork. For the September 13 celebration, the association’s “Come cerdo, come sano” campaign announced restaurant promotions and retail discounts, linking a popular breakfast directly with demand for national production.
