Malaysia launches GeoSAWIT to map and verify oil palm plantations nationwide

Malaysia’s palm oil board has launched GeoSAWIT, a national geospatial platform covering estates, smallholders and plantation boundaries. The system is intended to improve land-use monitoring, supply-chain traceability and compliance with increasingly demanding international market requirements.

National platform covers estates and smallholders

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board, or MPOB, has launched GeoSAWIT, a national geospatial platform designed to map and verify the locations and boundaries of oil palm plantings across Malaysia. The system covers both large estates and areas cultivated by smallholders, creating a broader digital view of the country’s plantation landscape.

Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad announced the platform at the Malaysian Palm Oil Industry Awards 2025/2026 in Kuala Lumpur. According to Utusan Malaysia, GeoSAWIT will give MPOB more accurate information for monitoring land use and assessing risks within the industry.

DagangNews reported that the platform is intended to strengthen transparency and traceability in Malaysia’s palm oil sector as global buyers place greater emphasis on sustainability and verifiable supply chains. Noraini said digital technology would also help smallholders meet international market requirements that can otherwise be difficult to address without reliable location and production records.

GeoSAWIT complements existing traceability system

GeoSAWIT will operate alongside the Sawit Intelligent Management System, known as SIMS. MPOB Chairman Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha said the two systems form part of the board’s digital approach to improving traceability throughout the national palm oil supply chain.

The mapping layer addresses a basic requirement of credible traceability: knowing where plantations are located and where their boundaries lie. More accurate and reliable geospatial records can support checks on land use, connect supply-chain participants with production areas and give regulators a stronger basis for risk assessment and data-led oversight.

The platform could be particularly relevant for smaller producers. Estates generally have more resources to maintain digital records and respond to buyer requests, while dispersed smallholders can face higher administrative and technical barriers. Nationwide mapping may help close that information gap, although its commercial value will depend on data completeness, regular updates and effective integration with SIMS.

Data becomes part of Malaysia’s market positioning

Noraini presented traceability as more than a compliance exercise. She said GeoSAWIT and SIMS could support the international branding of Malaysian palm oil by demonstrating responsible and transparent industry management alongside product quality. Utusan Malaysia reported that the minister called for industry performance to be judged not only by productivity and output, but also by the adoption of current technology.

The launch comes after a record production year. According to DagangNews, Malaysia produced 20.28 million tonnes of crude palm oil in 2025, exceeding 20 million tonnes for the first time. Exports of palm-based products were valued at RM125 billion, illustrating the commercial importance of maintaining access to major global markets.

For producers, processors and traders, GeoSAWIT’s immediate significance lies in the quality of the evidence available behind each supply chain. Verified plantation data can make compliance checks more efficient and improve confidence among buyers, but a mapping portal alone does not guarantee full traceability. Its impact will ultimately rest on coverage of smallholders, verification standards, interoperability with transaction records and consistent use across the industry.
