Italy's industrial vehicle market stalls in summer: July flat, August down 2.5%

Registrations of vehicles above 3.5 tonnes in Italy were flat in July 2026 at 2,863 units and fell 2.5% in August to 1,263, according to UNRAE estimates based on Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport data reported by ANSA. The eight-month total remains 3.0% higher at 19,200 units, while UNRAE presses for the multi-year road haulage fund to become operational.

Italy's industrial vehicle market stalls in summer: July flat, August down 2.5%

Italy's market for industrial vehicles with a gross weight above 3.5 tonnes lost momentum over the summer, with July registrations essentially unchanged year on year and August down 2.5%. The figures come from estimates by UNRAE's Centre for Studies and Statistics, based on registration data supplied by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), reported by ANSA on 23 September. The association's industrial vehicles section tied the slowdown to the absence of an operational multi-year support fund for road haulage.

July: flat headline, divergent weight classes

In July 2026 the market recorded 2,863 registrations, against 2,860 in July 2025, a gain of 0.1%. The stability of the total conceals sharply different movements between weight bands.

  • Light vehicles from 3.51 to 6 tonnes fell from 137 to 73 units, down 46.7%.
  • Vehicles from 6.01 to 15.99 tonnes rose from 296 to 311 units, up 5.1%.
  • Heavy vehicles of 16 tonnes and above gained 2.1%, with 2,479 registrations against 2,427 a year earlier.

Within the heavy segment the mix shifted markedly. Rigid trucks contracted by 11.3%, from 1,071 to 950 units, while road tractors, the units that pull semi-trailers on long-distance work, advanced 12.8%, from 1,356 to 1,529 units.

August: registrations fall 2.5%

In August 2026 the market recorded 1,263 registrations, 2.5% below the 1,296 of August 2025. The decline in light vehicles from 3.51 to 6 tonnes continued, with volumes dropping from 64 to 36 units, a fall of 43.8%. Vehicles from 6.01 to 15.99 tonnes went from 162 to 145 units, down 10.5%.

Vehicles of 16 tonnes and above edged up 1.1%, with 1,082 registrations against 1,070 in the same month of 2025. Both sub-segments grew: rigid trucks from 509 to 517 units, up 1.6%, and road tractors from 561 to 565 units, up 0.7%. Total August volumes were less than half those of July.

Eight-month volumes up 3.0% as UNRAE presses for funding

Across the first eight months of 2026 the Italian market reached 19,200 registrations, 3.0% above the 18,642 units recorded in the same period of 2025.

"The slowdown of the market in the summer months shows that certainty is needed to invest in fleet renewal," said Giovanni Dattoli, President of UNRAE's Industrial Vehicles Section. "Almost a year after the resources were allocated, we ask that the multi-year fund for road haulage become operational as soon as possible. Defined timeframes are needed for access to incentives and the disbursement of contributions, with simple procedures for all companies." Effective availability of the support, he added, would allow companies to turn investment plans into orders for new vehicles.

Dattoli said investments in industrial vehicles commit companies for many years and require support policies that are equally long-lasting, noting that structural and continuous measures with predictable rules allow firms to assess financing solutions and the economic return of a purchase, and to schedule vehicle replacement according to their operating needs. He also called for Italy to align fully with European rules, arguing that implementation of the Eurovignette Directive through tolls proportionate to CO2 emissions would recognise the environmental performance of cleaner vehicles in their running costs. Incentives and road charging, he concluded, must operate coherently, making such vehicles more affordable across their entire operating life and supporting more balanced competitive conditions for Italian operators in the single market.
