India Leads Indonesian Coal Export Destinations in July 2026

India takes the largest share of July shipments

India was the biggest destination for Indonesian coal exports in July 2026, receiving 6.42 million tonnes valued at US$425.87 million. The figures come from Indonesia’s statistics agency, Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), as reported by Databoks.

Indonesia’s total coal exports reached 29.02 million tonnes during the month, generating US$2.43 billion. India therefore accounted for more than one-fifth of the reported export volume, underlining its importance to Indonesian miners, trading companies and port operators. The flow also reflects the scale of Indian demand for imported coal across power generation and industrial consumption.

China and the Philippines remain major markets

China ranked second among the destinations identified in the data. Indonesian exporters shipped 4.29 million tonnes of coal to China in July, with a reported value of US$348.32 million. Although this was 2.13 million tonnes below India’s volume, China remained one of Indonesia’s core coal markets.

The Philippines placed third, importing 3.39 million tonnes worth US$255.15 million. Together, India, China and the Philippines received 14.10 million tonnes, close to half of Indonesia’s total coal exports for the month. The concentration shows how strongly Indonesian shipments depend on large Asian buyers, even though the country also serves a broader group of regional and international markets.

Seven-month exports reach 201.47 million tonnes

BPS recorded cumulative Indonesian coal exports of 201.47 million tonnes between January and July 2026. The value of those shipments reached US$14.47 billion. The seven-month figures confirm that coal remained a substantial source of merchandise export revenue for Indonesia, while the July destination data highlight the commercial importance of India within that trade.

For producers and traders, the destination mix affects vessel deployment, contract negotiations and exposure to demand changes in individual markets. India’s lead in July gave Indonesian suppliers a large outlet for volume, while continued purchases by China and the Philippines provided additional demand across Asia. At the same time, the gap between shipment volume and export value across destinations indicates that cargo specifications, contract terms and market conditions can influence realized revenue; the source data do not provide the detail needed to separate those factors. Future monthly figures will show whether India’s position represents a sustained pattern or a single-month shift in purchasing.
