Sugar futures fall for a second session

Global sugar prices moved lower for a second straight session, weighed down by signs of improving monsoon rainfall across India. The October New York world sugar No. 11 contract (SBV26) fell 0.21 cents, or 1.41%, while the August London ICE white sugar No. 5 contract (SWQ26) dropped 5.90, or 1.26%.

The declines extended a run of weakness in both the raw and refined sugar markets, with New York futures sliding to fresh session lows as the trading day progressed.

India's monsoon eases supply concerns

The pressure on prices came from better-than-expected monsoon rainfall in India, one of the world's largest producers and consumers of sugar. The seasonal rains are critical for the country's cane crop, and stronger precipitation improves prospects for cane development and eventual sugar output.

Ample rainfall reduces the risk of a domestic supply shortfall and lowers the likelihood that India would need to restrict exports to protect local availability. Both the raw sugar traded in New York and the white sugar traded in London responded to the improved supply outlook.

Implications for the global sugar trade

For importers, softer futures point to lower landed costs for both raw and refined sugar in the months ahead, easing input pressure for refiners and food manufacturers. For leading exporting origins such as Brazil and Thailand, weaker New York and London benchmarks compress margins if the downtrend persists.

The move remains weather-driven. A larger Indian crop would loosen global balances, but the outlook can shift quickly if rainfall disappoints in the weeks ahead, leaving the market sensitive to each new update from the monsoon season.
