European Heatwave Brings Beaujolais Nouveau to Japan a Month Early as Suntory Cuts Volumes 11%

The first shipment of 2026 Beaujolais Nouveau arrived at Haneda Airport on 28 September, the earliest delivery since 1985, after a European heatwave pushed the French harvest forward by about two weeks. Suntory, the main importer, plans to bring in about 33,000 cases, 11% less than a year earlier, while holding retail prices at 2025 levels.

European Heatwave Brings Beaujolais Nouveau to Japan a Month Early as Suntory Cuts Volumes 11%

The first shipment of 2026 Beaujolais Nouveau landed at Tokyo Haneda Airport on 28 September, about a month ahead of the usual schedule, after a heatwave across Europe accelerated ripening in France’s Beaujolais district. Nikkei reported that the Air France flight from Paris touched down at 5:26 a.m. carrying 220 cases, or 2,640 bottles.

Heat compresses the harvest calendar

Beaujolais Nouveau is made from grapes picked in the same year in the Beaujolais district of France and sold from a fixed release date. FNN reported that the heatwave drove ripening so quickly that the harvest was brought forward by about two weeks, producing the earliest arrival in Japan on record. According to Nikkei, the 28 September delivery is the earliest first shipment since 1985; in a normal year the wine reaches Japan around late October. Shipping was moved forward in part to reduce the storage burden that the early harvest placed on producers.

The weather also shaped the wine itself. Nikkei reported that high temperatures and dry conditions reduced the grape harvest, while lifting the maturity and concentration of the fruit, with alcohol reaching 14 degrees — described as the highest on record for the product. Suntory said the 2026 wine has a rich, full flavour of glossy ripe berries with spreading fruit aromas, according to FNN and Nikkei.

Suntory plans an 11% volume cut

Suntory, the main importer into Japan, plans to bring in about 33,000 cases on a nine-litre-per-case basis, 11% less than a year earlier, Nikkei reported. The company will again offer four types and six items, including Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2026, with sales released at midnight on 19 November.

  • First arrival: 220 cases, or 2,640 bottles, at Haneda at 5:26 a.m. on 28 September
  • Earliest first delivery to Japan since 1985
  • Suntory import plan: about 33,000 cases, down 11% year on year
  • Line-up: four types and six items, unchanged from last year
  • Expected retail price: around 3,256 yen for a 750 ml bottle of Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2026

A shrinking market in Japan

Beaujolais boomed in Japan from 1980 to the early 2000s, but consumption has been weak in recent years and the market continues to contract, according to Nikkei. Wine group Mercian, Asahi Beer and Sapporo Beer have all withdrawn from importing and selling the wine themselves. Suntory estimates that Japan’s total import volume in 2026 will fall by about 10% from the previous year.

Procurement costs are moving the other way. Higher raw material prices and a weak yen have pushed up sourcing costs, but Suntory — the only major alcoholic beverage company still selling the wine — said it worked with its supplier to absorb the increase. Prices are being held level with 2025: the expected retail price for a 750 ml bottle of Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2026 is around 3,256 yen.

Yumeki Sato of Suntory’s marketing division said that younger consumers in particular have come to prefer gathering in small groups with close friends, and that the company will propose ways of enjoying Beaujolais suited to that style of consumption.
