HappyVore claims lead over Nestlé in France’s plant-based meat market

HappyVore says it has captured 22.7% of France’s plant-based meat market, moving ahead of Nestlé’s Garden Gourmet in the latest measured period. Annual data still place Garden Gourmet first for 2025, highlighting how market definitions and measurement periods affect the ranking.

French plant-based meat producer HappyVore says it has become the leading brand in its domestic market, moving ahead of Nestlé’s Garden Gourmet. According to Circana data reported by 20 Minutes and other French publications, HappyVore held a 22.7% market share in January 2026, compared with 18% for Garden Gourmet at the end of 2025. The result marks a significant advance for a French small and medium-sized company founded only six years earlier.

The ranking is not uncontested. Nestlé says Garden Gourmet remained the leading plant-based prepared-food brand in France over the full year of 2025. Nielsen data cited by 20 Minutes put Garden Gourmet at 20% for the year, against 17.7% for HappyVore. The two sets of figures cover different periods and may use different category boundaries, making the latest result evidence of a competitive shift rather than an undisputed annual victory.

Sales growth drives factory expansion

HappyVore generated €35 million in revenue in 2025 and expects to exceed €50 million in 2026, according to Agra. The company says its growth increased sevenfold over the past three years. It now intends to double revenue within two years and is considering international development over the medium term, although France remains the core market.

Industrial capacity is central to that plan. HappyVore operates its own factory at Chevilly in the Loiret department, opened in 2022 to produce meat substitutes in France. The company has added a night shift and announced more than 20 new positions at the site as it prepares for higher volumes. HappyVore says the factory has created close to 100 jobs in total.

The group reports a workforce of 170 people, more than 20 products and distribution through 10,000 retail outlets and 5,000 restaurants. In 2025, supermarkets and other large and medium-sized retailers generated 70% of revenue, while foodservice represented 30%. HappyVore expects that split to remain unchanged in 2026, giving it exposure to both household purchases and professional kitchens.

A local model challenges a global portfolio

HappyVore began in 2020 under the name Les Nouveaux Fermiers, after development work by founders Guillaume Dubois and Cédric Meston. Its range has expanded beyond plant-based steaks to include sausages, nuggets, breaded products and meat-free charcuterie alternatives. Les Marchés reports that several years of research and development were required to create a plant-based cordon bleu with a satisfactory cheese alternative.

The company’s rise shows how a focused domestic producer can challenge a multinational with an established international brand. HappyVore combines local manufacturing, national supermarket coverage and a broader product range aimed beyond vegetarian and vegan consumers. Garden Gourmet retains scale, brand recognition and leadership under full-year Nielsen data, so competition will depend on sustained sell-through rather than a single reporting period.

For suppliers and retailers, the next test is whether faster production and more shelf space translate into repeat purchases. HappyVore says plant-based alternatives are now priced relatively close to meat, reducing one barrier to wider adoption. Its planned revenue growth, new factory jobs and possible international expansion indicate that the company is moving from start-up development toward industrial scale, while Nestlé’s response will help determine whether the latest change becomes a lasting realignment of the French category.
