Fonterra lifts 2026/27 farmgate milk price forecast to NZ$9.50 per kg of milk solids

Fonterra Co-operative Group revised the midpoint of its forecast farmgate milk price for the 2026/27 season to NZ$9.50 per kilogram of milk solids from NZ$9.25, citing recent improvements in global dairy commodity prices. Forecast midpoint lifted to NZ$9.50 per kilogram

Fonterra Co-operative Group has revised the midpoint of its forecast farmgate milk price for the 2026/27 season to NZ$9.50 per kilogram of milk solids, up from NZ$9.25 per kilogram. The co-operative said the revision reflects recent improvements in global dairy commodity prices, while it retains a prudent approach to the season ahead.

The increase of 25 cents per kilogram lifts the midpoint by about 2.7%. The farmgate milk price is the reference price Fonterra pays its farmer-shareholders for each kilogram of milk solids supplied, and revisions through a season track the prices the co-operative achieves for the commodity products it sells into export markets. A higher midpoint feeds directly into supplier cash flow expectations and into New Zealand's dairy export earnings.

Fonterra publishes the forecast as a range with a midpoint, so the figure is an expectation rather than a fixed commitment, and it can be moved again before the season closes.

Shares close higher in Wellington

The revision came on a session in which New Zealand shares ended higher. The S&P/NZX 50 rose 0.6%, or 82.06 points, to close at 13,821.20 on Monday, with most Asian markets also gaining amid reports of better global oil supply than previously thought.

Other items on the day's corporate and commodity tape:

  • Saudi Arabia's oil exports rebounded to slightly above 4 million barrels per day so far in September, up from 2.4 million barrels per day in August, the OPEC leader's weakest level since at least 2013, according to a Reuters report citing data from analytics firm Kpler.
  • Tower completed the renewal of its reinsurance programme for the financial year ending 30 September 2027.

Rate path points higher

The upgraded milk price forecast lands against a tightening monetary backdrop. According to a note by ANZ, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is expected to raise the official cash rate by 25 basis points in October, followed by two further hikes pencilled in for February and March, taking the OCR to a peak of 3.5% — the upper end of the central bank's range of estimates for the neutral rate.

For dairy suppliers, the interest rate path matters alongside the payout. Debt servicing costs on farm balance sheets rise with the OCR, and a higher policy rate typically supports the New Zealand dollar, which trims the local-currency value of dairy sold in US dollars on world markets.

Domestic demand indicators were steady. Credit card spending in New Zealand rose 0.2% month-over-month to NZ$4.46 billion in August, while credit card balances increased 0.3% to NZ$5.94 billion, according to data from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Grocery competition on the political agenda

New Zealand's Labour Party plans to force "immediate action" to increase competition in the country's grocery market, including required changes affecting Woolworths Group and Foodstuffs. Any mandated change in the grocery channel would be felt by processors and brand owners selling dairy into New Zealand supermarkets, although no detail on the timing or content of the proposed measures was given.

For importers of New Zealand dairy, the more relevant signal is the payout itself. A forecast midpoint set at NZ$9.50 per kilogram of milk solids is an expectation that commodity prices for powders, butter and cheese hold at improved levels through the 2026/27 season rather than fall back, and contract pricing in destination markets tends to follow that expectation before it is confirmed by the final payout.
