Weekly service targets smaller refrigerated shipments

FDL has launched FriGo, a temperature-controlled groupage service connecting Greece and Cyprus through fixed weekly departures. The company designed the service for businesses that need to move sensitive goods in quantities below a full load while maintaining the cold chain throughout the journey. FDL presented the service as a response to a gap in reliable, regularly scheduled refrigerated groupage on the route, according to an interview with International Forwarding Operation Manager Stelios Livanios published by Metaforespress.

The service is aimed primarily at companies shipping food, dairy products, processed meats, frozen goods and other temperature-sensitive cargo. By consolidating smaller consignments, FriGo gives shippers access to scheduled refrigerated transport without requiring each business to fill an entire vehicle or transport unit. FDL said demand has been rising for smaller and more frequent deliveries as companies seek to reduce inventories while retailers and consumers place greater emphasis on food safety, traceability and dependable delivery times.

FDL assumes door-to-door responsibility

FriGo covers the transport chain from collection at the shipper’s premises in Greece to delivery at the final recipient in Cyprus. FDL consolidates cargo at its facilities and says the temperature-controlled chain remains uninterrupted during transport. The company positions the arrangement as a single-managed service, giving customers one logistics provider responsible for the shipment rather than requiring them to coordinate separate operators for collection, line haul and final delivery.

Final distribution is handled by DIAPO, FDL’s subsidiary with an organised delivery network covering Cyprus. That local capability allows FDL to extend the service beyond the main arrival point and deliver directly to recipients across the country. For producers, processors and distributors of perishable goods, this arrangement concentrates responsibility for cargo handling, temperature integrity, traceability and delivery performance within the same corporate group.

A strategic route for temperature-controlled freight

Livanios described Greece as Cyprus’s largest trading partner over time and the bilateral corridor as one of the most important routes in the Eastern Mediterranean. He did not provide figures for the current size of the temperature-controlled freight market. However, he said demand remains high for the movement of food, dairy, frozen products and other goods requiring controlled conditions, and that organised refrigerated groupage has room for further growth.

The commercial proposition rests on frequency and consolidation rather than disclosed new fleet or warehouse capacity. Weekly departures can give shippers a predictable planning cycle, while groupage is intended to accommodate companies sending smaller consignments more often. The model may be particularly relevant to suppliers serving Cypriot retailers or food-service customers that need regular replenishment but cannot justify full-load shipments on every dispatch.

FDL characterises FriGo as a strategic investment in the Greece-Cyprus connection. No pricing, transit-time, shipment-volume or investment figures were disclosed in the Metaforespress interview. The service will therefore be judged by operational factors that are central to refrigerated logistics: maintaining the required temperature, providing shipment visibility, meeting the weekly schedule and completing final delivery consistently across Cyprus.
