EU takes 83% of Spain's fruit and vegetable exports as non-EU demand fades

Spain shipped 3.7 million tons of fruit and vegetables to the EU between January and April 2026, 83% of total volume, according to FEPEX data reported by fruchtportal.de. Sales to Canada, the United States, Brazil and other non-EU markets fell, deepening the trade's reliance on Europe.

EU takes 83% of Spain's fruit and vegetable exports as non-EU demand fades

Spain's fresh produce trade is leaning more heavily on Europe than at any recent point, with the European Union alone taking the overwhelming share of shipments while distant markets retreat, according to figures compiled by the Spanish fruit and vegetable exporters' federation FEPEX and reported by fruchtportal.de.

EU cements its role as Spain's dominant market

Between January and April 2026, the EU absorbed 3.7 million tons of Spanish fruit and vegetables, equal to 83% of total export volume, worth €6.597 billion or 81% of total value. Volumes to the EU-27 fell 3.4% from a year earlier, yet their value rose 5.7%, based on customs and excise data analyzed by FEPEX. The gap points to firmer prices across the bloc even as tonnage eased.

The pattern of falling tonnage but rising receipts held across most European destinations, suggesting price rather than volume drove the value gains. For exporters it means the near-European market is where revenue is being protected even as physical demand softens.

European market approaches total dominance

Outside the EU, Spanish exports reached 768,165 tons in the first four months, down 2%, while value rose 3.7% to €1.517 billion. Non-EU destinations made up 17% of volume and 18% of value. Adding European countries outside the Union — the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland — lifts the European market to 4.36 million tons, or 97% of volume, worth €7.973 billion, 98% of the total.

  • EU-27: 3.7 million tons (83% of volume), €6.597 billion
  • Non-EU: 768,165 tons (17% of volume), €1.517 billion
  • Total European market incl. UK, Norway, Switzerland: 4.36 million tons (97%), €7.973 billion

Germany leads; distant markets contract

Germany remained the largest single destination with 1.2 million tons (-2.5%) valued at €2.408 billion (+5%). France followed with 734,266 tons (-7%) and €1.215 billion (+5%), and the United Kingdom with 511,593 tons (-5%) and €1.045 billion (+3%). The Netherlands took 356,851 tons (-7%), while Portugal (302,354 tons, +8%) and Italy (226,501 tons, +6%) posted gains.

Beyond Europe, the leading markets shrank. Shipments to Canada fell to 7,370 tons (-24%) and €14 million, Saudi Arabia to 7,190 tons (-13%) and €11 million, and the United Arab Emirates to 3,563 tons (-36%) and €8.5 million. Exports to the United States dropped to 3,583 tons (-10%) and €15 million, while Brazil fell 47% to 1,977 tons and €2.3 million. Volumes to China eased 5% to 1,238 tons, though value rose 5% to €2.2 million.

Taken together, the data underscore how narrowly concentrated Spanish fresh produce trade has become. With 98% of export value staying within a broadly European orbit, shifts in demand or currency inside the EU carry far more weight for Spanish growers than any single overseas market, several of which now account for only a few thousand tons each.
