Egyptian potato prices hold steady as European and Gulf orders continue
Egyptian potato exporters are reporting stable prices at the start of the new-crop export campaign. Orders from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Gulf markets remain consistent despite competition from early European harvests.
New-crop export campaign starts with stable prices
Egyptian potato exporters have entered the new-crop campaign with prices holding steady, supported by consistent orders from Arab and European buyers. FreshPlaza reports that demand has remained stable even as early domestic potato harvests create additional competition in European markets.
Muhammed Shaker, export manager at Egyptian supplier Al Mansi, said the company is at the beginning of this year’s export campaign. Most of its current orders are coming from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, while Italy is buying smaller volumes.
Shaker said Egyptian potato prices are currently stable in part because the campaign has only just begun. He expects a good season and noted that many established customers continue to place orders despite the availability of early domestically grown potatoes in European countries.
European buyers remain active despite local crops
The continuation of European orders is significant for Egyptian suppliers because early local harvests give buyers an alternative source of potatoes. The orders reported by Al Mansi indicate that Egyptian produce is retaining a place in procurement programs rather than being immediately displaced as European supply becomes available.
The source material does not provide shipment volumes, contract prices or comparisons with previous seasons. It therefore remains unclear whether stable prices reflect stronger overall demand, controlled export availability or a balance between Egyptian supply and competition from European crops.
For exporters, the early stage of the campaign also means that present pricing conditions may not represent the entire season. European harvest development, product quality and the pace of repeat orders will determine whether the current stability can continue as more potatoes reach the market.
Gulf demand matches last year’s pace
Demand is also coming from Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Al Mansi specializes in the European market, but Shaker confirmed that buyers in these Arab markets are active during the current campaign.
FreshPlaza cited another industry source as saying that demand for Egyptian potatoes is particularly strong in Gulf countries. According to that source, the pace of Gulf demand is in line with the level recorded last year, providing exporters with a second regional outlet alongside Europe.
Shaker expects the present market conditions to persist over the coming months. He also said potato quality is expected to remain consistent through the end of the export period in May. If orders and quality develop as anticipated, stable demand across Europe and the Gulf should continue to support Egyptian suppliers during the remainder of the campaign.
