Dominican Republic posts record 2025 rice harvest of 14.78 million quintales
The Dominican Republic harvested a record 14.78 million quintales of rice in 2025, alongside gains in corn, beans and root crops, the Ministry of Agriculture said. The results mark the highest levels for most strategic crops in 25 years.
Rice reaches a historic high
Rice production in the Dominican Republic reached a record 14.78 million quintales harvested in 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture said, describing the figure as a "historic record." According to the newspaper elDinero, the result is the highest for the crop in the 2000-2025 series and reinforces the country's self-sufficiency in its main dietary staple.
Rice is the country's core staple grain, so a record domestic crop reduces the volumes it would otherwise need to source from abroad in a typical year. The ministry linked the outcome to higher yields and greater productive efficiency, adding that most strategic crops posted their highest levels in 25 years.
Corn, beans and root crops
Beyond rice, grain and legume output advanced. Corn reached 2.09 million quintales, while red beans came in at 600,000 quintales. Black bean production topped half a million quintales for the first time, and pigeon pea (guandul) closed the year near 654,000 quintales.
Root and tuber crops also expanded, according to the ministry data reported by elDinero:
- Cassava (yuca): 6.28 million quintales
- Potato: 2.87 million quintales
- Sweet potato: more than 2.16 million quintales
- Yam (ñame): over 1.2 million quintales
- Yautía (tannia): close to 1.67 million quintales
Bananas, plantains and livestock
The ministry singled out musaceous crops as one of the year's standout performers. Plantain production reached 4.39 million thousand units, while bananas (guineos) exceeded 80.3 million bunches, a result the ministry said confirms these crops' role in both domestic consumption and the exportable supply.
The institution also reported sustained growth in vegetables, fruits and Asian vegetables. In livestock, meat and egg output continued to rise on the strength of the poultry, pork and cattle sectors, which the ministry said improves the country's ability to meet national demand.
A 25-year peak
The Ministry of Agriculture said the 2000-2025 statistical series shows that 2025 marks the highest point in a sustained evolution of Dominican agriculture, with record figures across most of the main agricultural crops and livestock activities. It attributed the results to modernization, technification and a strengthening of the sector, and said the gains expand capacity to supply the internal market and reinforce exports.
