China Becomes Kyrgyzstan’s Main Potato Supplier as Imports from Pakistan Fall 94%

Pakistani shipments fall sharply

Kyrgyzstan’s potato import market underwent a pronounced change in the first half of 2026, with China replacing Pakistan as the country’s largest supplier. Tazabek reported, citing foreign trade statistics, that Kyrgyzstan imported 305 tonnes of potatoes from Pakistan in January-June 2026. In the same period a year earlier, the volume had reached 5,110 tonnes.

The year-on-year decline amounted to 4,805 tonnes, or 94%. Pakistan therefore supplied only about 6% of the volume it had shipped to Kyrgyzstan during the first six months of the previous year. The available data do not provide the value of those shipments, their average import price or Pakistan’s share of Kyrgyzstan’s total potato imports.

China takes the leading position

China accounted for the largest volume of Kyrgyz potato imports during January-June 2026, according to the Tazabek report. The source material does not disclose the exact tonnage supplied by China or the country’s total imports, making it impossible to quantify China’s market share or determine whether overall inbound volumes increased or decreased.

Even without those figures, the change in supplier ranking is significant. A reduction of 4,805 tonnes from Pakistan created substantial room for competing origins. China’s emergence as the leading source shows that Kyrgyz importers were able to redirect procurement, although the data do not indicate whether Chinese potatoes replaced the entire missing Pakistani volume.

The statistics also do not explain why Pakistani deliveries contracted. No information is provided on harvest conditions, domestic prices, freight costs, border procedures, quality requirements or commercial decisions by individual suppliers. The 94% decline should therefore be treated as a documented change in trade flows rather than evidence of any single production or policy shock.

Implications for potato market participants

For Kyrgyz wholesalers and food businesses, the shift increases the importance of Chinese supply conditions. Availability, contract terms and logistics from China will have a greater influence on imported potato flows while Pakistan’s presence remains far below its previous level. The effect on retail and wholesale prices cannot be established from tonnage data alone.

Pakistani growers and exporters have lost most of a market that absorbed more than 5,000 tonnes of their potatoes in the comparable period. Recovering that business would require them to compete with the supply channels that moved China into first place. The published figures do not show whether Pakistan’s decline continued after June 2026.

Domestic Kyrgyz producers also need to distinguish between a change in import origin and a change in total import competition. If Chinese deliveries merely replaced Pakistani potatoes, the pressure from imported supply may be broadly unchanged. If the supplier switch coincided with higher or lower overall imports, the consequences for local inventories and prices would be different. Complete data on total volume, customs value and other origins are required to make that assessment.
