Japan becomes Agrosuper’s leading pork destination

Japan has become Agrosuper’s largest export destination by net pork sales so far in 2026, according to CNN Chile. The country is also the Chilean food company’s second-largest global market by total sales, behind only the United States. The change reflects strong Japanese demand for a specialized product that has limited consumption in Chile but serves as an important raw material for Japan’s meat-processing industry.

The product, known in Spanish as “paleta pimentada,” is a seasoned pork shoulder cut used extensively in sausage manufacturing. Agrosuper Japan Country Manager Ismael Eguía said its sales volume increased 214% between 2020 and 2025. He attributed the product’s position in Japan to its technical standard, flavor and consistency, characteristics that matter to processors seeking reliable inputs for standardized production.

A concentrated international supply base

Production of seasoned pork shoulder is highly specialized. Six countries account for 99% of global supply, CNN Chile reported. Chile participates through Agrosuper, the only domestic producer of the product. That gives the company a differentiated position in an international pork segment where production expertise is concentrated among a small group of suppliers.

Japan imports slightly more than 110,000 tonnes of seasoned pork shoulder annually, and Agrosuper holds an 11.3% share of that market. The figures imply annual Agrosuper sales of roughly 12,000 tonnes if the reported market size and share are applied directly, although the company did not disclose an exact shipment volume. Demand is anchored by Japan’s mature processed-meat industry, which produces around 296,000 tonnes of sausages a year. Wiener-type products represent the largest area of consumption.

Local presence supports wider market access

Agrosuper has operated directly in Japan through its Tokyo office since 2004. Its sales in the market have risen by more than 40% over the past six years. Eguía said the increase resulted from diversifying both customers and products. The company now has direct clients across 40% of Japan’s prefectures, expanding its reach beyond a limited number of large buyers.

The Tokyo operation employs 12 professionals, including 10 Japanese nationals. This local structure has helped the supplier adapt to Japanese commercial practices and product requirements. Agrosuper now accounts for 6% of all frozen pork imports entering Japan, a broader measure than its 11.3% share in seasoned pork shoulder. For Chilean pork, the product demonstrates how specialization and direct market coverage can build share in a large, demanding destination without relying primarily on domestic consumption of the same cut.
