Chihuahua supplies 85.7% of Mexico’s apple harvest through August

Mexico harvested 433,235 tonnes of apples between January and August 2026, with Chihuahua accounting for 85.7% of the volume. Published figures show strong geographic concentration, although a reported comparison with 2025 is inconsistent with the stated annual total.

Chihuahua dominates national production

Mexico produced 433,235 tonnes of apples between January and August 2026, according to Impacto Noticias. Chihuahua supplied 85.7% of the harvest recorded during that period, confirming the northern state’s dominant position in the country’s apple industry.

Puebla ranked second with 6.8% of national output, while Durango contributed 3.8%. Together, the three states represented 96.3% of the harvest reported through August. Such concentration makes national availability highly dependent on growing, water, infrastructure and logistics conditions in a small group of producing regions, particularly Chihuahua.

Published annual comparison does not match stated totals

Impacto Noticias said the January-August 2026 harvest was already more than 50% above Mexico’s production for all of 2025. However, the same report placed full-year 2025 output at 810,850 tonnes, substantially above the 433,235 tonnes reported for the first eight months of 2026. On the figures provided, the 2026 volume through August equals approximately 53.4% of the stated 2025 total, rather than exceeding it by more than 50%.

The discrepancy means the available data do not support a conclusion that annual production has already surpassed last year’s crop. The final 2026 result will depend on volumes collected during the remainder of the harvest. September 20 marks the end of harvesting in many producing areas and coincides with Mexico’s National Mexican Apple Day, according to Impacto Noticias.

Domestic supply still leaves room for external fruit

Mexico’s 2025 apple crop was valued at approximately 9.026 billion pesos, an increase of 5.7% from the previous year. Domestic production covers around 77% of national demand, while average consumption stands at 8.4 kilograms per person annually. That coverage rate indicates that local orchards do not fully supply the market, leaving a continuing role for fruit from outside the domestic production base.

For growers, packers and distributors, Chihuahua’s 85.7% share concentrates both scale and risk. A large crop in the state can raise the volume moving into storage, sorting and wholesale channels over a relatively short period, while any regional disruption can affect availability across Mexico. Puebla and Durango provide some diversification, but their combined share remains far below Chihuahua’s. Market participants will need final harvest figures before assessing whether 2026 output changes the balance between domestic supply and the portion of demand not covered by Mexican production.
