BSR ships first commercial B5 biodiesel batch from Dung Quat refinery
Vietnam’s BSR has sold its first commercial batch of B5 biodiesel after successfully blending both B5 and B10 at the Dung Quat refinery. The nearly 45 m³ delivery will provide technical, commercial and customer data for potential expansion of the company’s biofuel business.
First commercial deliveries
Vietnam’s Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company, known as BSR, has shipped its first commercial batch of B5 biodiesel from the Dung Quat refinery. The sale follows the company’s successful blending of both B5 and B10 biodiesel and marks the first market test of the products under commercial operating conditions.
Kien Thuc reported that BSR formally launched the sale on August 6, 2026. The Military Petroleum Corporation received 25 m³, while Nam Phuc Investment Joint Stock Company received 19.5 m³. Deliveries were scheduled for August 5-10 under FCA Dung Quat terms. VietnamPlus described the combined volume as nearly 45 m³.
B100 feedstock supports market trial
The B5 batch complied with BSR’s TCCS 25:2026/BSR company standard. According to Kien Thuc, commercial conditions were otherwise aligned with the company’s 2026 sales contracts. BSR sampled the blended fuel from its storage compartments and tested it in the refinery laboratory. Samples were also taken for conformity assessment under method 7, which certifies a specific product lot on the basis of statistically selected test samples.
The trial began with 3,000 litres of B100 supplied for research and production testing. Kien Thuc said about 2,250 litres remained after the research phase, enough to produce approximately 43-45 m³ of B5. VietnamPlus defines B100 as pure biodiesel containing 100% fatty acid methyl ester, or FAME, made from vegetable oil, animal fat or used cooking oil and containing no petroleum diesel. B5 incorporates a smaller biodiesel component into conventional diesel, allowing BSR to test renewable content without replacing the refinery’s existing diesel base entirely.
Data will guide expansion
BSR said the initial sale is intended to generate technical and commercial data as well as customer feedback. The two buyers will allow the company to assess blending, dispatch, transport and use under real operating conditions. The results will inform further work on production procedures, quality control, sales organization and market expansion. No timetable or capacity target for larger-scale B5 or B10 production was disclosed.
The project forms part of a wider product-development program at Dung Quat. VietnamPlus said BSR has now successfully produced or blended sustainable aviation fuel, sustainable marine fuel, E10 RON 95 gasoline and B5 and B10 biodiesel. The company is also broadening the refinery’s feedstock options. Kien Thuc reported that BSR processed Nigeria’s Erha crude and Vietnam’s Sao Vang-Dai Nguyet condensate in June 2026, lifting the number of crude grades it can process to 40. Tests indicated that the refinery could operate at 119-120% of design capacity, with Erha accounting for up to 45% of processing volume and the condensate for up to 12%. For fuel distributors and prospective biodiesel suppliers, the first B5 shipment establishes a tested commercial route, but future market scale will depend on feedstock availability, repeat purchases and BSR’s decisions following the trial.
