China’s BriHyNergy ships its largest European electrolyzer order to Romania

BriHyNergy has shipped a 15 MW PEM electrolyzer system to a Romanian customer, its largest European order to date. The three-unit installation is expected to begin operating by the end of 2026 and supply hydrogen to sectors including steel, chemicals and heavy transport.

BriHyNergy delivers 15 MW system

Chinese electrolyzer manufacturer BriHyNergy has shipped a 15 MW proton-exchange membrane system to a customer in Romania, marking the company’s largest order in the European market so far. Antena 3, citing Hydrogen Insight, reported that the equipment is intended for a Romanian project scheduled to enter operation by the end of 2026.

The customer, project location and company that ordered the equipment have not been disclosed. The planned plant is expected to produce hydrogen for applications including steelmaking, chemical production and heavy transport. These are sectors in which direct electrification can be difficult, particularly where industrial processes require hydrogen as an input or long-distance transport limits the practicality of batteries.

Three modules share auxiliary equipment

The installation consists of three 5 MW PEM electrolyzer units. They will use common balance-of-plant equipment, the auxiliary systems required to operate the electrolyzers. According to the company, the modular configuration will allow the equipment to operate flexibly and adjust hydrogen output according to the availability of renewable electricity.

BriHyNergy’s scope covers system design, equipment integration and the control solutions required to run the installation. The order therefore represents more than a shipment of electrolyzer stacks: it is the company’s first large European delivery of a complete, integrated hydrogen-production system. BriHyNergy had previously supplied only components and electrolyzer stacks to customers in Europe.

Chinese supplier expands its role in Europe

Based in Shenzhen, BriHyNergy develops PEM and anion-exchange membrane, or AEM, water-electrolysis technologies for green hydrogen production. PEM equipment uses electricity to split water and can support production profiles that vary with renewable-power availability. The shared auxiliary infrastructure in the Romanian system may also allow the three modules to be managed as one installation while retaining operational flexibility.

The shipment comes as Romania seeks to develop a green-hydrogen industry and as European demand for renewable-hydrogen equipment grows. Chinese manufacturers are expanding into this market amid global competition to lower electrolysis costs. For European project developers and industrial hydrogen users, BriHyNergy’s move from component supply to integrated systems adds another potential equipment source. For manufacturers already serving Europe, the 15 MW delivery signals greater competition not only in electrolyzer stacks, but also in engineering, integration and plant-control capabilities.
