Brazil's Corn Market Turns Cautious as 2026/27 Planting Advances

Corn trading in southern Brazil and Mato Grosso do Sul has slowed as buyers limit purchases to immediate needs and growers hold back sales, according to TF Agroeconômica. Rio Grande do Sul's state average reached R$ 61.98 per bag with 2026/27 planting at 60% of 896,400 hectares, while Mato Grosso do Sul trades between R$ 54.00 and R$ 55.50.

Brazil's Corn Market Turns Cautious as 2026/27 Planting Advances

Corn trading in southern Brazil and Mato Grosso do Sul has turned cautious as seeding of the 2026/27 crop advances, with buyers restricting purchases to immediate replacement needs and growers holding back sales. According to consultancy TF Agroeconômica, cited by O Correio News, the combination is thinning liquidity across trading hubs, while regional supply gaps and weather damage pull the market in different directions.

Buyers replenish, sellers stay selective

TF Agroeconômica describes buyers as concentrated on replenishment and producers as selective sellers, a standoff that keeps traded volumes low even as physical availability differs sharply between states. The spread between the strongest and weakest regional quotes is close to R$ 7 per bag, wide enough to redirect flows within the South. Attention is split between the progress of new-crop planting, the effects of frost and hail in parts of Rio Grande do Sul, and the pull of industrial demand in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Rio Grande do Sul: planting at 60%, frost and hail damage

In Rio Grande do Sul, indications range from R$ 60.00 to R$ 61.98 per bag, and the state average price calculated by Emater rose 0.62% to R$ 61.98. Planting of the 2026/27 crop has reached 60% of the 896,400 hectares planned. Frost caused localized damage and forced replanting in some areas, while hail events also produced losses. Production is estimated at about 6.91 million tonnes. With the state average sitting at the top of its own quoted range, Rio Grande do Sul remains the most expensive corn market in the region.

Santa Catarina deficit, Paraná harvest near completion

  • Santa Catarina: references hold near R$ 60.00 per bag against buying interest around R$ 55.00. The state consumes approximately 8.5 million tonnes a year and produced 2.67 million tonnes in 2025/26, leaving a deficit close to 6 million tonnes covered by corn from other Brazilian regions and from Paraguay.
  • Paraná: purchases are running near R$ 55.00 per bag CIF while indications sit close to R$ 60.00. The 2025/26 second-crop harvest has reached 95% of 2.91 million hectares.
  • Paraná new crop: first-crop 2026/27 planting is 43% complete on a projected 373,000 hectares, and 97% of established areas are in good condition.

The roughly R$ 5 gap between bids and offers in Santa Catarina and Paraná explains the slow pace of business. Santa Catarina's structural shortfall guarantees a buyer, but not at Rio Grande do Sul prices: with Paraguay and other Brazilian states as alternatives, processors there can wait. Paraná's near-complete second-crop harvest adds to available supply and reduces the urgency to book forward.

Mato Grosso do Sul: bioenergy underpins demand

In Mato Grosso do Sul, prices range from R$ 54.00 to R$ 55.50 per bag. After recent gains the market lost momentum, although the bioenergy industry continues to absorb part of the supply and remains an important demand channel. That industrial offtake is the main reason quotes in the state have held above R$ 54.00 despite fading spot interest, and it keeps Mato Grosso do Sul competitive as an origin for buyers in Santa Catarina and Paraná.
