Belarus takes 10th place

Belarus ranked 10th among the world’s fertilizer exporters in 2024 after supplying 2.44 million tonnes to foreign markets, Nasha Niva reported, citing Thinktanks.pro and data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

The FAO figures cover nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizers and express trade volumes in terms of nutrient content. This basis allows different categories of fertilizer to be included in a single international ranking, but it is not the same as the physical weight of all finished products shipped.

Global fertilizer exports exceeded 113.3 million tonnes during the year. Belarus therefore accounted for slightly more than 2% of the reported worldwide total. The figures establish the country as a significant supplier, although its volume remained far below those of the largest exporters.

Russia leads the supplier ranking

Russia held first place with exports of 23.23 million tonnes, almost one-fifth of the global total and more than nine times the Belarusian volume. Canada ranked second with 14.42 million tonnes, followed by Morocco with 12.15 million tonnes.

China occupied fourth place after exporting 10.13 million tonnes. The United States completed the five leading positions with 6.37 million tonnes. Together, these five countries supplied more than 66 million tonnes, based on the reported figures, illustrating the concentration of fertilizer trade among several major producing regions.

The composition of this group also reflects the breadth of the market covered by the ranking. It combines exporters associated with nitrogen, phosphate or potash supply rather than measuring competition within only one fertilizer segment. Buyers and traders consequently need product-level data to assess direct competition between Belarus and any individual supplier.

Belarus leads most neighboring countries

Among the countries neighboring Belarus, only Russia exported more. Poland ranked 19th with 1.07 million tonnes, while Lithuania placed 24th with 727,200 tonnes. Latvia was 62nd with 64,300 tonnes, and Ukraine ranked 86th after exporting 13,300 tonnes.

Belarus shipped more than twice Poland’s volume and more than three times Lithuania’s. The gap indicates its greater weight in regional fertilizer supply, while Russia’s result shows the substantially larger scale of the leading producer. For importers, processors and agricultural buyers, these rankings identify where export capacity is concentrated but do not show destination markets, prices, transport corridors or margins. The available figures therefore confirm Belarus’s global position without revealing how its trade was distributed across routes and customers.
