Bashkortostan triples rapeseed output as China and Belarus drive demand
Bashkortostan increased rapeseed production from 26,000 tonnes in 2021 to 81,000 tonnes in 2026. China and Belarus are the main buyers, while regional processors supply rapeseed oil, meal and other products to export and domestic markets.
Rapeseed harvest reaches 81,000 tonnes
Bashkortostan has more than tripled its production of rapeseed in five years as the Russian region expands oilseed cultivation and targets buyers abroad. According to ZOL.ru, farms in the republic produced 81,000 tonnes of rapeseed in 2026, compared with 26,000 tonnes in 2021.
The increase amounts to 55,000 tonnes over the period and reflects the growing role of rapeseed in the region’s agricultural sector. ZOL.ru links the expansion to Bashkortostan’s export potential and implementation of the national project “International Cooperation and Export.”
The available figures show growth in physical output but do not specify changes in planted area, yields or farm-gate prices. Those indicators will determine whether the expansion can be sustained and how effectively local growers can compete with other Russian oilseed-producing regions.
Processors supply oil, meal and feed products
Several enterprises in Bashkortostan process rapeseed, including the Chishminsky oil extraction plant and the Elevator and Oleokemiks plants. Their products are shipped mainly to export markets and other regions of Russia, according to ZOL.ru.
The republic produced about 21,000 tonnes of rapeseed oil in 2025. Output reached approximately 7,000 tonnes in the first four months of 2026, providing an early indication of processing activity during the year, although the source does not give a full-year forecast.
Rapeseed oil has several end markets. The food industry uses it in margarine, mayonnaise and confectionery, while it also has applications in cosmetics and medicine. The oil can additionally serve as a feedstock for biodiesel production.
Processing also generates rapeseed cake and meal, which are used as feed additives for livestock. Rapeseed flowers, leaves and stems can be processed into silage, haylage and grass meal. Rapeseed meal from Bashkortostan is sold within the republic and in other Russian regions, supporting a domestic outlet alongside exports of seed and oil.
China and Belarus lead foreign demand
China and Belarus are the main buyers of Bashkortostan’s rapeseed products. In the first six months of 2026, the region exported about 8,000 tonnes of rapeseed oil to China. Approximately 1,600 tonnes of rapeseed were shipped to Belarus during the reported period.
The figures point to different demand profiles in the two markets: China is buying processed oil, while Belarus is importing the agricultural commodity itself. For Bashkortostan’s processors, oil exports allow more value to be retained locally than shipments of unprocessed seed, while seed exports provide growers and traders with an additional sales channel.
The reported volume sent to China in six months was already equivalent to more than one-third of Bashkortostan’s entire rapeseed oil production in 2025. However, the reporting periods are not directly comparable, and the source does not state whether every shipment exported in 2026 was produced during the same year.
Future growth will depend on the ability of farms, crushers and logistics operators to coordinate rising seed supply with processing and delivery requirements.
