BarMar hydrogen pipeline aims to connect Spain and France across the Mediterranean

The proposed BarMar subsea pipeline would carry renewable hydrogen from Barcelona to Fos-sur-Mer in southern France. As part of H2Med, it could open an export route from Spain and Portugal to industrial markets in France, Germany and northwestern Europe.

A new Mediterranean energy connection

Spain and France are preparing a subsea hydrogen link that could redirect part of Europe’s future energy trade through the Mediterranean. The BarMar project is designed to connect Barcelona with Fos-sur-Mer near Marseille, joining renewable hydrogen production in the Iberian Peninsula with industrial demand in France and farther north.

AS reports that the direct route would be about 400 kilometers long. The same report says the wider system will require close to 450 kilometers of subsea pipeline, together with compression stations and links to national hydrogen networks. BarMar has not yet entered construction, but preliminary studies have found the marine route technically feasible and identified no major seabed obstacle preventing its development.

The project has also entered public consultation and environmental assessment, both required stages for major European energy infrastructure. The planned operators include Spain’s Enagás and the French companies GRTgaz and Teréga, alongside other European operators involved in the broader corridor.

H2Med targets industrial markets farther north

BarMar is the maritime centerpiece of H2Med, a corridor that also includes CelZa, the connection between Celorico in Portugal and Zamora in Spain. Together, these links are intended to move renewable hydrogen from Portugal and Spain into France and eventually toward Germany and northwestern Europe.

According to AS, the full H2Med system is intended to transport as much as 2 million tonnes of hydrogen annually. That would be equivalent to approximately 10% of Europe’s projected hydrogen consumption in 2030. If the current schedule is met, the infrastructure is expected to become operational at the beginning of the next decade.

The commercial logic rests on the Iberian Peninsula’s solar and wind resources. Renewable power could support hydrogen production in Spain and Portugal, while the pipeline would provide access to large industrial consumers in northern Europe seeking lower-emission energy. For exporters, the corridor would create a dedicated physical route into markets that are difficult to serve at scale without cross-border pipeline capacity.

Strategic status does not remove execution risks

BarMar grew partly from the abandoned MidCat pipeline debate, but its proposed cargo is different. MidCat focused on natural gas, whereas BarMar is planned for renewable hydrogen. The European Union has recognized H2Med as strategic infrastructure, included this category of project in its priority TEN-E energy network and selected BarMar for European funding, according to AS.

The project nevertheless remains before the construction stage. Environmental approvals, public consultation, engineering work and integration with Portuguese, Spanish, French and German networks still have to support a functioning trade corridor. Competing supply routes are also taking shape: Tunisia, Italy, Austria and Germany have joined Algeria in announcing a green hydrogen project intended to supply Europe from North Africa. For importers and exporters, BarMar’s importance will therefore depend not only on pipeline capacity, but also on delivery schedules, hydrogen availability and connections to end users.
