Storage pipeline targets 2,340 MWh

Thai energy group Banpu plans to expand its battery energy storage system portfolio to 692 MW of power and 2,340 MWh of storage capacity by 2029. Thansettakij reported that the company is directing investment toward renewable generation and battery storage assets across five core markets: Australia, Japan, China, the United States and Vietnam.

Banpu currently has 1,534 MWh of storage capacity in operation or under development. Its stated target therefore represents an increase of 806 MWh. The storage portfolio itself is distributed across Australia, Japan, China and the United States, while Vietnam forms part of the wider five-market renewable energy and storage strategy.

Australia accounts for the largest share

Australia is the largest storage market in Banpu's portfolio, with 453 MW and 1,606 MWh. The planned assets include the 1,400 MWh Wooreen project in Victoria, designed to supply electricity for as many as 230,000 households during peak demand. The 206 MWh Kerang project, also in Victoria, will complement an existing Australian renewable generation portfolio of 167 MW.

Japan is Banpu's second-largest storage market, with projects in operation or development totaling 129 MW and 514 MWh. The company aims to raise its Japanese BESS capacity to 1 GWh by 2030. Its portfolio includes the operational Iwate Tono project at 15 MW and 58 MWh, as well as Hiyoshibaru at 80 MWh, Nikko at 160 MWh, Aizu at 104 MWh, Tsuno at 104 MWh and Kamigumi-Tokyo at 8 MWh. Banpu also has 57.6 MW of installed renewable generation in Japan.

Projects connect storage with regional power markets

In the United States, Banpu's first battery storage investment is the Megamouth project in Texas. The facility has a power rating of 100 MW and storage capacity of 200 MWh and is intended to connect to the grid and participate commercially in the ERCOT merchant electricity market. Banpu also has 2.5 MW of installed renewable generation in the country.

In China, Banpu is combining solar generation with battery storage. Its installed renewable portfolio totals 363.4 MW, alongside 10 MW and 20 MWh of BESS capacity reported by Thansettakij. The 120 MW Jinhu Qianfeng solar farm includes 20 MWh of storage and is expected to begin commercial operations in the third quarter of 2026. Across the portfolio, the projects are intended to reduce the operational constraints created by variable renewable output and give Banpu greater exposure to electricity trading and grid-balancing demand in several distinct power markets.
