Two solar plants to supply Onuba

Alter Enersun will supply 500 GWh of photovoltaic electricity annually to Moeve’s Onuba renewable hydrogen project in Palos de la Frontera, in Spain’s Huelva province. According to El Español, the companies have signed a long-term power purchase agreement worth more than €250 million.

The electricity will come from the La Luz and Puerto Sostenible solar plants in Huelva. La Luz is already operating and is expected to provide approximately 265 GWh a year. Puerto Sostenible remains under development and would add another 235 GWh annually under a preliminary agreement.

The two facilities together would therefore provide the full 500 GWh covered by the arrangement. The contract gives the hydrogen project access to a defined volume of renewable electricity while supporting the development of additional photovoltaic generation in the same province as the industrial complex.

Initial electrolyser capacity of 300 MW

Onuba is the first phase of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley promoted by Moeve. Construction has begun at the company’s energy park in Palos de la Frontera. The plant will initially have 300 MW of electrolysis capacity, with the possibility of adding a further 105 MW, El Español reported.

The facility is expected to produce approximately 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year. Its projected emissions reduction is 250,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, while the combined investment associated with the Onuba plant exceeds €1 billion.

Moeve controls 51% of the initiative. Other participants include Hy24, Cofides, Enagás Renovable and Alter Enersun. The wider Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley is planned to reach total electrolysis capacity of 2 GW and is described by El Español as Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen energy project.

Renewable supply becomes part of the industrial build-out

Moeve hydrogen director Miguel Ángel Devesa said large-scale renewable hydrogen production requires coordinated progress across all necessary components, including access to competitively priced renewable power. Alter Enersun chief executive José Luis Morlanes said the supply would contribute to decarbonising transport and industry and strengthening Spain’s energy autonomy.

For Alter Enersun, the agreement expands an existing footprint in Huelva, where it has operated solar parks since 2018. The company also has a similar PPA with Atlantic Copper, another major industrial operator in Huelva and Andalusia. Its portfolio comprises more than 150 rooftop and ground-mounted photovoltaic installations across Spain, Portugal and Mexico.

The agreement links Onuba’s hydrogen capacity directly to named power assets, but part of the contracted supply still depends on the completion of Puerto Sostenible. Once both plants are contributing, their stated annual output would be split almost evenly between the operational La Luz facility and the project still under development.
