Algeria and Spain Sign Red-Meat Partnerships Ahead of Ramadan 2027

Algerian operators signed two agreements with Spain’s PROVACUNO and INTEROVIC to strengthen red-meat supplies and develop cooperation in livestock production. The initiative combines preparations for Ramadan 2027 with longer-term work on genetics, logistics, slaughterhouses and animal health.

Algeria and Spain Sign Red-Meat Partnerships Ahead of Ramadan 2027

Two agreements link Algerian and Spanish operators

Algerian and Spanish industry bodies have signed two cooperation agreements covering red-meat supplies, technical expertise and potential investment as Algeria prepares for Ramadan 2027. The agreements were concluded in Algiers during a bilateral meeting held under the theme “Unifying markets, strengthening the sector,” according to Awras.

The first agreement connects Algerian red-meat company ALVIAR with Spain’s beef industry organization PROVACUNO and sheep and goat meat organization INTEROVIC. The second brings the same Spanish organizations together with Algeria’s National Union of Red Meat Importers. The parties intend to exchange market and regulatory information, organize business meetings, trade missions and technical events, and develop new commercial partnerships.

Cooperation extends beyond meat imports

The program covers animal genetics, logistics, animal health, welfare, traceability, product quality and food safety. Mohamed Rezgui, chief executive of ALVIAR, said the framework would support exchanges of information and expertise while improving local breeds and logistics. Sofiane Bahbou, spokesperson for the Algerian importers’ union, identified slaughterhouse modernization and intensive livestock farming in southern Algeria as areas where Spanish technology and experience could be used.

Spain’s ambassador to Algeria, Ramiro Fernandez Bachiller, said Madrid wanted to move beyond commercial exchanges toward lasting cooperation in livestock production. JUST-INFODZ reported that Spain remains Algeria’s leading supplier of red meat. Cristina E. Olazabal Valiente, economic and commercial adviser at the Spanish embassy, said Algeria is the largest destination for Spanish beef exports outside the European Union.

PROVACUNO data cited by Awras put Spanish beef exports to Algeria at about 27,000 tonnes annually, equivalent to nearly 10% of Spain’s total beef exports. A separate figure published by El Moudjahid said Spain shipped approximately 15,000 tonnes of beef and more than 8,000 tonnes of sheep meat to Algeria in the first half of 2026, worth over €200 million. The figures underline the size of the existing trade relationship as both sides consider investment across more stages of the supply chain.

Early preparations target Ramadan demand

Short-term supply security remains a central part of the initiative. Rezgui said the AGROLOG group, working with Algeria’s Ministry of Trade, had taken measures to meet demand during Ramadan 2027 and had begun preparations about six months earlier. Bahbou said the necessary volumes would be imported to prevent shortages.

Algeria’s minister of domestic trade and national market regulation, Amel Abdelatif, has also met red-meat importers to discuss regular supply, product availability and early preparations for Ramadan. The agreements therefore serve two objectives: securing imported meat for a period of high consumption and building domestic capabilities that could reduce dependence on repeated short-term interventions. Business-to-business meetings at the Algiers event examined investment and cooperation opportunities across the red-meat chain, but the sources disclosed no individual contracts, investment values or production targets.
