AKTOR to take 50% of Motor Oil's Agioi Theodoroi FSRU
Greece's AKTOR Group has signed a framework of key terms with Motor Oil to acquire 50% of Dioryga Gas, developer of the Agioi Theodoroi FSRU. The unit would add up to 210,000 cubic metres of LNG storage and link to Greece's national gas grid. The deal remains subject to final contracts and regulatory approvals.
AKTOR to take 50% of Motor Oil's Agioi Theodoroi FSRU
Greece's AKTOR Group is moving deeper into liquefied natural gas and critical energy infrastructure. According to Kathimerini, the company has signed a framework of key transaction terms with Motor Oil to acquire a 50% stake in Dioryga Gas, developer of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at Agioi Theodoroi. The unit is planned to connect to the National Natural Gas Transmission System.
The agreement follows a disclosure on 29 June 2026, when AKTOR said it was in discussions with Motor Oil over investment options in the natural gas market. Completion remains subject to conditions, including the finalisation and signing of the definitive contracts and the required corporate, regulatory and other approvals.
A mature, licensed regasification project
The FSRU that Dioryga Gas is developing at Agioi Theodoroi is described as one of the most mature and fully licensed projects of its category in Greece. It is expected to add up to 210,000 cubic metres of LNG storage capacity. Designed to work alongside the national grid, it would reinforce the flexibility and resilience of the energy system and support the Vertical Energy Corridor in Southeast Europe.
AKTOR says the deal fits a strategy of investing in projects tied to security of supply and diversification of energy sources in Greece and the wider region. It expects the acquisition to strengthen LNG regasification capacity in the country and, on its own assessment, potentially improve margins in the segment.
Positioning in Southeast Europe
The group aims to expand its role in the energy security market of Southeast Europe. It has already secured LNG commercial agreements of 1.5 bcm, with long-term binding contracts corresponding to turnover of €9 billion over the 2030-2050 period, and is targeting additional agreements of 5 bcm.
According to Kathimerini, the Agioi Theodoroi FSRU could become a new energy gateway from Greece toward Southeast and Eastern Europe as the European market seeks alternative supply and cuts its dependence on Russian gas. For importers along the corridor, added regasification capacity in Greece widens the options for sourcing seaborne LNG instead of piped Russian volumes.
What remains open
AKTOR's proposed 50% acquisition is estimated to speed the economic, technical and operational maturation of the project, bringing it closer to implementation. For now the transaction is not completed and depends on the signing of final contracts and on corporate and regulatory approvals. AKTOR said it will keep investors informed of any material developments in line with the applicable regulatory framework.
